چکیده

Emerging standards from ISO/TC 211 convey principles for building interoperable, distributed geographical information systems. Important building blocks are UML for specifying the conceptual schema and XML for implementation-neutral exchange of geodata models. By means of a model-based approach using UML, and corresponding mapping to XML and service implementations, it is possible to provide a well-founded basis for interoperability. Essential parts of this methodology have been elaborated, tested and proven successful in the Esprit project DISGIS. The ISO/TC 211 principles are recommended as a general framework for building interoperable SDIs within a GSDI.

DISGIS: An Interoperability framework for GIS - using UML and XML

The work reported here has been done within Distributed Geographical Information Systems(DISGIS) in the period from June 1996 to June 1999. DISGIS is an EC-supported Esprit project and the focus has been to develop mechanisms for GIS Interoperability, based on use of state of the art technology from the distributed system domain. The DISGIS Interoperability approach is based on the ISO RM-ODP m...

Revisiting the Concept of Geospatial Data Interoperability within the Scope of Human Communication Processes

Geospatial data interoperability has been the target of major efforts by standardization bodies (e.g. OGC, ISO/TC 211) and the research community since the beginning of the 1990s. It is seen as a solution for sharing and integrating geospatial data, more specifically to solve the syntactic, schematic, and semantic as well as the spatial and temporal heterogeneities between various representatio...

A Framework for Handling Mobile Objects in Location Based Services

In this paper we present the Web based framework that provides efficient management, tracking and displaying of data about mobile objects in Web based Geographic Information Systems (Web GIS) and Location Based Services (LBS) applications built on top of it. The proposed framework heavily exploits contemporary Web data exchange and display technologies such as XML, GML and SVG integrating geosp...

Geospatial Standards , Interoperability , Metadata Semantics and Spatial Data Infrastructure

The main standards now being implemented in the geospatial world emanate from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 211 Geomatics/Geographic Information (generally referred to as ‘TC 211’), in their 19xxx series of standards. Because some EU Member States have legal requirements that ‘European standards’ be used for various types of work, if they exist, th...

Model-driven Engineering for Implementing the Iso 19100 Series of International Standards

In this paper we discuss the implementation of the ISO 19100 series of standards with use of Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques. We expose how MDE is beneficial for prototyping and building an end-user application dedicated to the sharing of environmental data (especially within the context of coastal zones). We present with an illustrating example of a way to use ISO 19109, 19110 and 19...
